The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) explained
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is a UK government initiative that provides upfront grants to property owners in England and Wales to encourage the installation of low-carbon heating systems
Eligibility criteria - in order to be eligible for the BUS grant one needs to…
1. Live in England or Wales - The BUS scheme is only available for properties within England or Wales.
2. Own the property - the application must be made on behalf of the property owner
3. Replace a fossil fuel heating system - the heating system being replaced must be a fossil fuel system or an electric one that did not include a heat pump. Gas condensing boilers and hybrid heat pumps are not included.
4. Have a valid EPC - that has been issued within the last 10 years. Old EPC requirements to include recommendations for loft or cavity wall insulation will now be dropped (effective date still to be confirmed by the Government) - so you won't need to include any additional installation to get the BUS grant anymore.
5. Installer certification - the new heating system must be installed by an MCS-certified installer, which ensures technical competence and adherence to the right standards.
How the BUS works
1.Installer-Led Process - The BUS enables the transition to clean heating by putting installers in charge. Your chosen MCS-certified installer will handle most aspects of the process, making it hassle-free for you.
2. Grant Amounts - The BUS provides generous grants to offset the cost of clean heating systems. The current grant amounts are:
Air Source Heat Pumps and Ground Source Heat Pumps: £7,500 grant.
Biomass Boilers: £5,000 grant.
3. Zero VAT on Installation - there's 0% VAT to 31 March 2027 on the installation of energy-saving materials, including heat pumps and biomass boilers.
4. Consent - After your installer applies on your behalf, you'll receive a consent request. Confirming consent doesn't bind you to a specific installer but gives the Government assurance of your authorization.
5. Completion of the Project - Your installer has a specific timeframe to complete the installation (3 moths for air source heat pumps).
